Air Crash Investigation (6) - Atlantic Southeast Airlines Flight 529

Flight 529 left the ramp area at Atlanta at 12:10, and took off at 12:23. At 12:43:25 and climbing through 18,100 feet, a thud was heard which the co-pilot described as sounding like a baseball bat striking an aluminum trash can.
One of the blades of the propeller on the left engine had failed and the entire assembly had become dislodged, deforming the engine nacelle and distorting the wing’s profile.

Update: Spanair crash

A failure in the cockpit alert system contributed to the crash of a Spanair jet at Madrid Airport last month which killed 154 people, El Pais newspaper reported on Tuesday, citing preliminary investigation results.

NEWS: Terror for 300 passengers

Two jets carrying 288 passengers collided on the runway of one of Britain’s busiest airports yesterday.

The ‘rear-end’ smash at Manchester Airport caused at least £4million of damage.

It ripped a 4ft slice of a wing tip off one of the planes and wrecked the rear tailplane of the other.

Air Crash Investigation (5)

One of the blades of the propeller on the left engine had failed and the entire assembly had become dislodged, deforming the engine nacelle and distorting the wing’s profile. Although the EMB 120 is designed to fly with one engine simply malfunctioning, the distortion of the engine resulted in excessive drag and loss of lift on the left side of the aircraft, causing it to rapidly lose altitude.
